Savuti Game Reserve - part two of our mobile safari in Botswana

Our journey in Botswana started end of may 2022 at the Chobe River and led us south via Savuti, Khwai River to the famous Moremi Game Reserve, far down in the Okavango Delta. I already wrote about the first part at the Chobe River in the last blog entry. Here we are talking about a completely different landscape - the Savuti Game Reserve.

The Savuti region consists of the Savuti Channel, the Savuti Marsh, the Mababe Depression and the Magwikhwe Sand Ridge.

The Savuti Region is irrigated by the irregularly flowing Savuti Channel, which fills the Savuti Marsh with water. Unfortunately, it has not been for a long time and minor earthquakes are believed to have changed the course of the Savuti River. The Savuti Marsh is known for the annual migration of zebra, kudu, impala, wildebeest and predators. Savuti is also famous for its bull elephants and a pride of lions that specialise in elephant hunting. Typical for the region are also dead trees that have been preserved as witnesses of the dry periods.

Behind the term 'Mababe Depression' is the bed of an ancient lake. The lake only fills up when water flows in the Savuti Channel. The rather brown landscape eventually becomes a dream in green, attracting vast numbers of zebra, impala, hartebeest, kudu, wildebeest, buffalo, lion, leopard, hyena, wild dog and jackal. However, during the dry season, which peaks in October, the wild animals also resort to man-made water holes.

The low sand ridge of the Magwikhwe Sand Ridge is probably the former western boundary of another large lake.

We spent a total of three days at our Mobile Safari Camp in Savuti. Here are a few photographic impressions of the landscape and wildlife in Savuti.
