When Fujifilm presented the brand new Fujifilm GFX100S medium format camera at the online press conference on 27 January 2021, it was clear to me that I would be following an all-in strategy with Fujifilm Medium Format in the future. Away from the Fuji APS-C line (with one exception…) and all the way to medium format. I actually started this change more than two years ago with the purchase of the GFX50R in December 2018 and it is more than consistent to make this step now with the 2nd generation from Fuji. With the GFX100S, Fujifilm is now entering the high-price segment of full-frame cameras below Sony (Alpha 1) and above Canon (R5) in terms of camera size and price - what a clever strategy!

Let me explain: on the one hand, the sensor technology of Fujifilm APS-C cameras is exhausted and on the other hand, the field of full frame cameras is already occupied by Sony, Canon & Co. Therefore, it is only logical that Fujifilm skips a sensor size and in the future fully focuses on medium format for the mass market...well, that's a bit exaggerated now.

Anyway, 2 days after the press conference I ordered the 100 megapixel monster. In the meantime I sold my GFX50R and all of Fuji's APS-C equipment - except my beloved X-100V - the counterpart to the GFX100S - small, pretty, pocketable - a future classic. I have also optimised my wildlife Sony full-frame equipment. I ended up with a nice amount of money, which was enough for the GFX100S and the brand new GF 80mm f/71.7 R WR. Now we have to wait until the announced delivery at the beginning of March 2021...I'll keep you posted. Hopefully with the first pictures as soon as spring arrives.
