Lake Vänern, as the Swedes call it, is located in the southwest of the country, in the triangle of the cities of Trollhättan, Karlstad and Mariestad.

Läckö Strand, Lake Vänern, Sweden
The lake is ten times the size of Lake Constance and about twice the size of its eastern brother, Vättern. An open expanse of water of this size could only have been formed during the Ice Age.
The Vänern does not have huge tributaries on the scale of the Rhine. It is rather a collection of many smaller rivers.
