Al-Balad - The historic old town of Jeddah | Saudi Arabia
Historic Jeddah is a port city on the Red Sea. It was the destination for ships transporting goods to Mecca across the Indian Ocean, as well as a transit point for all pilgrims to Mecca who traveled by ship. This brought prosperity to Jeddah and led to the development of its own architectural tradition, combining the building techniques of the Red Sea coastal towns with craft techniques that had been developed along the trade routes.
Due to the influx of pilgrims during the Hajj, Jeddah's population was multicultural, with Muslims from Asia, Africa, and the Middle East settling here.
